Monday's Minute Challenge: Writing Prompt Contest for Teens & Up

A quick writing challenge (and contest) to help get your creative juices flowing for the new week.

  1. The entry must be between 150 - 300 words. Otherwise, your entry will not be accepted. (In order to see how many words your entry is, write it in Microsoft Word, or you can copy and paste it here.)
  2. The deadline for the contest will be the following Friday.
  3. You do not have to be a teen to enter the contest.
  4. The same person cannot win first place two weeks in a row. (Some exceptions may apply.)
  5. If there is at least 5 entries, the panel of judges will select a 2nd and 1st place. If there is at least 10 entries, the judges will select a 3rd, 2nd, and 1st place. However, if there is under 5 entries, the panel of judges will only select one winner.
  6. If there are at least 10 entries, there will be a few Honorable Recognitions, which are the next highest winners. They will receive a badge, as well as 3 points.
  7. The winners will receive a badge for their blog, as well as extra points (see the point system below).
  8. The winner will be chosen based on the judges's preferences, as well as the following questions: Does this entry capture my attention immediately? Does it make me want to continue reading? Is the writing clear? They will also take into consideration the writer's voice and style--not necessarily technical issues, such as grammar, punctuation, etc.
  9. If you have entered at least 3 contests and have yet to place, send me an email and I will be happy to give you a critique of your last entry, which will include tips and suggestions.
  10. This is only for fun and to stretch your writing muscles--not necessarily to be taken too seriously. =)

The judge panel chooses these winners based on a point system (not to be confused with the point system mentioned above!)

Thanks so much to everyone who voted! It helped the judge panel tremendously.

Also, great job on the entries this week! The judge panel was very impressed and had quite a hard time judging your entries. =)

Since there were two entries that had the same amount of points for 3rd place, we have decided that they both deserved to place.

(Keep in mind that the judges are not aware of which entry belongs to which participant until after the judging is complete.)

The entries that the judges thought was the most intriguing (based on rule #4) is ...

Third place winner (tie):

I bent my head, was I really to die tonight?
The sea below me was bronze. The sun and clouds above me matched. It was beautiful, really, except for the fact that I was to die.
“Do you wish to tell the truth now, Abriana?”
I looked over my shoulder at him. He raised the ax a bit higher to where the sun caught it, blinding my sight.
“I have told you the truth the whole time. I. Didn’t. Do. It.” I clenched my jaw.
“Your choice, Abriana. But please trust me when I say that it is such a waste to lose you.” He looked almost saddened.
I bowed my head again, “Let Thy will come, Lord Jesus.”
I heard him takes several steps towards me and around me before he stopped by my side.
I thought a moment, what should my last words be? ‘I didn’t do’? ‘Why don’t you listen to me’? Should I even have any last words right now? No, I shouldn’t.
I thought of everything that had happened in my life, should I quote one of those things?
Right then, and right there, I decided something. I looked up, I saw him raise the ax high above my head, ready to bring it down on my neck.
I had to move fast. When it was coming down, I moved in a flash. I kicked it out of his hand to the bronze water below.
While he was still caught in a shock, I swung on my heel and started to run for me life. Of all days, why did I choose to wear a dress?
Congratulations, TW! Click here for your badge. =)

Third place winner (tie):

She knelt alone on the damp sand-cliff, facing the rising of the sun. The wind blew warmly against her skin as she watched the beating of the waves against the shoreline, beating like the brokenness of her heart. It was amazing, this heart of hers; even when the bloody bruises of all her yesterdays mangled it beyond recognition, the weight of wounds crushing it down, it would not give up, but continued to beat steadily.

It was a miracle all of its own. Every minute, every second, of every day, she lived her own little miracle. Simply by the very act of breathing.

She clasped her hands over her heart as her eyes took in the beauty of the waters. She'd lived through more pain than she had ever thought possible, but she would not let it define her. It could not own her. Not anymore.

She murmured the words into the salty breeze. "By His wounds I am healed, by His grace I am redeemed. The old has gone, the new has come." She whispered it in defiance of all that sought to keep her bound in darkness.

"I am the one Jesus loves."

Congratulations, S. Brightly! Click here for your badge. =)

Second place winner:

I left.
I’m done.
I’m free.

I ran for miles. I ran without stopping even though my lungs burned something fierce and my shaky legs threatened to give out at any moment. I ran until I reached the edge of the cliff, and I collapsed gracelessly onto my knees as I greedily sucked in gasps full of the salty air.

No more shackles.
No more Godless, sleazy men.
No more torment.

I allow the relief to wash over me and the anxiety to dissolve as I look out over the clear blue waters and rolling waves. I’m finally safe. They can’t hurt me anymore. After countless months of being trapped in the dark, damp cell, after being stripped of every ounce of my dignity, and after being forced to endure the endless torture of my captor and his companions, I’m finally free, and I'm never looking back.

I fought.
I’m alive.
I’m safe.

As the sea breeze dances through my unkempt hair, I allow myself to smile for the first time in months. I can finally breathe.
Congratulations, Marsh! Click here for your badge. =)

First place winner:

I had never been more tempted to lie my entire life. Of course, most of the other times, I gave into the temptation. This time was different. Not only was I staring down the barrel of a gun, but this time, I actually didn’t lie. Sure, lying probably would have spared me, easy as that. But I couldn’t.
This time, I had a weakness, one that made me willing to give my life for another person. Love. It’s a word that made me want to hurl into the bushes, but at the same time almost made me want to smile despite the life-or-death situation.
Josh’s eyes burned holes into my head. I could imagine their soft brown igniting as they stared at me. I didn’t expect him to jump in to save me, or even to try. I’d basically given him away to the soldiers just to save myself. Now was my time to right my wrong.
The soldier jerked his gun closer to my face. “Tell me. Now.”
“I took Josh as a hostage. I forced him to lead me to your base. Go ahead.” I closed my eyes in anticipation of the crack of the gun.
It came. The crack echoed in my ears, but the bullet never pierced my skin. I opened my eyes a couple seconds later to see Josh sprawled across the ground in front of me, blood spilling from a wound in his chest that was meant for me. His brown eyes met mine, and he mouthed one word: “Okay.” That word alone told me everything I needed to know.
Congratulations, Katheline! Click here for your badge. =)

  1. I'm doing the picture prompt! Thanks for the honorable recognition!

“And out of the water rose the most beautiful woman he had ever seen…” Drake snapped the book shut. “Okay! I think that’s enough for today.”
Katie, his blind, twelve-year-old sister crossed her arms. “You are just saying that because you don’t like the book.”
Drake put his hands in the air. “You can’t tell me you honestly like this stuff! Nymphs, fairies, elves and they’re all ‘the most beautiful ever’.” Drake almost put air quotes around the most beautiful ever. It would take him awhile to get used to Katie being blind.
Katie pursed her lips. “I do, and if I could read it myself I would, but I can’t!”
Drake sighed and smiled lightly. “I know. I don’t mind Katie, really.”
    “Thank you.”
“But it would be nice if you liked Enders Game or Star Wars!”
Katie pushed in the general direction of Drake’s voice, almost pushing him off the couch. Drake laughed and stood up.
“I’m going out to the pond,” he said. “I’ll be back later.”
“And you will read with me!” Katie said, pointing her finger at him. Then smiling so Drake knew she was just teasing him.
Drake laughed. “Of course my lady.” Drake made his way out the back of their house, walking into the woods toward his favorite spot. It was too cold to get in the water, but he just liked the peace. He’d been going there a lot since Katie’s accident. When Drake reached the edge of the pond he blinked several times and pinched himself just for good measure. “Oh the irony,” he thought as he looked at the girl dragging her toe along the water as she sat in the swing above the pond. Drake was pretty sure he found one of the nymphs from Katie’s insufferable books.

  3. Tessa, when you say 'If you have entered at least 3 contests and have yet to place you'll give the person a critique', do you mean if they have not placed in the last 3 weeks or if they have not placed at all?
    Does that make sense?

    Thanks!

  10. This could have happened any other time. Why today? "Why does life have to be so unfair?" I muttered, grabbing my jacket. The fundraiser I'd promised to help my friends with paled considerably next to the fun weekend my family had planed -going to Disney World with my grandparents. I handed a suitcase to my little sister, Lizzy and wandered into the kitchen. "Hi honey, you sure you'll be ok when we're gone?" my mom asked me, putting things in the ice chest for the picnic lunch they'd be eating. I nodded, swallowing the lump in my throat. "We'll be leaving as soon as we can get everything and everyone..." she stopped, "Jordan," she called out the open window to my four year old, and now very muddy, brother, "stop playing in the puddles, we'll be leaving real soon, ok?" turning to me, she continued, "...as soon as we get everyone and everything in the car." I nodded again.
Minutes later the car was loaded up, "Bye Sophia, we're proud of you." Mom said.
"Bye Mom, bye everyone." I said, "Have fun." with many waves and hugs, they were goneAfter loading the dishwasher and sweeping the floor I replaced the broom by the door, glancing at the calendar as I did so, and realizing it was the first of July. Mom must have forgotten to change it. Switching the month, I read the Bible verse for the month.

Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men.

Suddenly happy, I grabbed my jacket as I went out the door.

  12. Here's my entry. :) I continued my entry from last week but also did the picture prompt.

Why did he have to go and die? He left me here. All alone. I wished he would come back just so I could slap him. That bullet was meant for me. He wasn’t supposed to die. The selfless idiot.
I kicked the water that danced just below my feet. When I did so, the swing lurched forward a bit and some of the water splashed up onto my dress. Reagan wouldn’t be too happy when she saw it, but she would get over it. She wouldn’t yell at me too much- today, anyways.
I looked up at sky. “Why, God? Why? Why did you take him?” Tears streamed down my face before I even realized I was crying. I let out a strangled scream and kicked the water again. “Why?”
As if in answer, the clouds that had been hovering overhead opened up to an onslaught of rain. “Ugh! Gee, thanks, God. Thanks for the comfort.” My voice probably carried through the trees and into the village beyond, but I didn’t really care. I didn’t care that it sounded like a dying cat.
I just cared to sit there and let the rain mix with my tears and sweep my sorrow down into the river.

  15. I used the sentence prompt.

This could have happened any other time. Why today? Just what we need, I struggled to keep my tiny wings from beating out of control, as I screamed at Rina to get down.
“Why? You'd be playing a joke on me.” she asked.
“As if you'd know when something's wrong?” I retorted.
I struggled to push Rina down, although my tiny body couldn't do anything. Hopefully, she'd realize I was serious.
Of course, her disbelief wasn't entirely unfounded. I had planned to convince her that the gnomes would attack her if she didn't eat a pear, after she'd mentioned she hated them, but I had to convince her to believe me this once.
    “Rina” I pleaded.
I had only one option; make a diversion.
“Please Rina.” I whispered, as I flew as fast as I could, about 20 yards away from her.
I glanced up, realizing I had seconds to act. I screamed at the top of my voice, still flying low.
“Stop! No, run that way! Nat!” That was brilliant, telling the dragon that I had a friend.
“Come and get me, butterfly!” I screamed at the dragon. Not my best, but any self-respecting dragon would take offense at being called a butterfly.
If I had to be captured by a dragon, why did it need to be purple? Couldn't it at least be a nice plain green or something? The dragon's purple, leathery wings flapped once as it swooped, grabbing me with it's claws.

  16. Here is my entry. It is 295 words and I am continuing my mystery story using the suitcase, jacket, and broom prompt.

My eyes widened and for the second time that night a scream lodged itself in my throat. Three men wearing hunting garb and carrying rifles emerged from the bushes. Two of them jumped forward and grabbed us, hauling us to our feet. “Get walking and not a word or else.” One of them hissed. I silently acquiesced, afraid of the consequences should I disobey. We marched off the road and into the thick woods surrounding. After what seemed like an eternity we came to a dilapidated shack well camouflaged with overgrown brambles. Our captures lead us roughly inside where we were tied up and made to sit in one of the dusty corners. I surveyed our surroundings with the small glow cast from the fire one of the men was starting in the fireplace. The dinky one-room building’s furnishings consisted of a table, two chairs, and an old broom stuffed in the corner opposite us. I shivered and envied the man standing by the warm fire with a jacket on since I wore only a thin sweater. On the table sat an open suitcase and by the meager amount of clothes I could see, it appeared they were traveling light. The sounds of an argument outside cause the man by the fire to look up from the embers. He uttered an oath and stormed out the rickety door. I laid my head back against the wall, glad the man was gone, when the voice at my side startled me.
    “My name is Cal Gresham.”
“Samantha Watson.” I told him. “Now will you please tell me what is going on?
“Well since you are already mixed up in this I might as well tell you.”
Finally, I would get the answers I had been dying for.

  18. I'm continuing mine from a couple weeks ago and using the line prompt. 177 words. :)

I grabbed my jacket and ran out into the rain. It was coming down so hard that it made our window look more like one of those built-in waterfalls than a pane of glass, but I didn't care. Maybe out there I would find the air I so desperately needed to breathe.

Water blinded me as I ran, my chest heaving, side aching unbearably. I wished it were only the rain, but truthfully, tears mixed equally with raindrops on my face.
This could have happened any other time. Why today? Why not before, when I had time to hold on to my heart? But now it was gone, and I feared I could never get it back.

Accusations rang bitterly in my head as I finally slowed to a painful walk. I should have been smarter. I should have realized the truth about Josh- even though it was a truth I couldn't imagine, not even now. How could he be capable of these things?

    Why, God, why?

It was the only prayer my broken heart could utter.

  19. I'm using the prompt "This could have happened any other time. Why today?" It's 185 words.

Cassidy took a deep breath as she ran off the portico into the back yard, straight past Lora and Carrie to her Springer Spaniel, Duke.
"Cassidy, come and play with us!" Carrie begged.
"Oh yes, please do," Lora added.
"Well," Cassidy said, looking up from patting Duke, "what shall we play?"
"Ooh, Puss want a Corner!" Flora cried from across the yard.
"All right," Cassidy said. She made a move to run towards them. All of a sudden Duke crouched down and started growling. Cassidy turned around immediately. "What's the matter, Duke?" she said, looking up towards the avenue. She could scarcely breathe as Duke's growls changed to barking.
"They've come!" Lottie screamed, stepping out onto the portico. "Oh, Aunt Rose, hurry! They've come!"
Aunt Rose hurried into the yard. "Hurry, children, get in the house!"
All the children scrambled to their feet and ran to the house as three young soldiers started walking up the drive.
Mr. King ran out onto the portico. "In the house!" he said sternly.
Cassidy could still scarcely breathe. This could have happened any other time. Why today?

  22. Mine is 299 words, and I used the three words prompt: jacket, broom, and suitcase

She could do it. She knew she could. All she had to do was pack her suitcase, hop on her broom, and fly away.

Kora shivered as she tugged her thin jacket closer to her trembling body. She was freezing and sticky. Her wet, soda soaked hair clung to her face no matter how many times she tried to swipe it away. As Kora sat on the front steps of her brownstone waiting on her landlord to come unlock the door, she cursed herself for deciding to attend a college intended for Norms instead of taking her friends’ and family’s advice and attending a school back home intended for Specials. If she had just stuck with her own kind instead of running off into a world she had no business living in, this never would have happened. She wouldn't be stranded outside of her locked apartment doused in diet coke with wads of gum stuck in her blonde hair and dried spit balls littering every square inch of her outfit, with trails of mascara running down her puffy red face. She wouldn't have gotten her satchel stolen which contained her crystals, book of spells, and house key in it. And she certainly would have never met the bane of her existence, Whitney and her slew of minions.

Oh how Kora wished she had her spell book to whip up a hex that would put Whitney in her place, but sadly, all ill spirited spells got you was a one-way ticket to see the Council and that’s the last thing she needed. She’s in enough trouble as it is since her magic materials are now in the hands of Norms. If only her biggest worries were her finals coming up next week and getting this gum out of her hair.
