I think we don’t realize how powerful our words are. I think it’s so easy to forget. Tucked away in our offices or bedrooms, behind bright screens and headphones, we can begin to feel detached. We can begin to feel as though what we say doesn’t really matter all that much, when in fact the opposite is true.

I love the way my sister put it in a recent video: “much like filmmakers, as writers we are deciding what to project onto the silver screen of our readers imaginations.”

So often we don’t even realize we wield this power - and that’s exactly what it is: a superpower.

With our words, we have the ability to bring despair, or spark hope. We can sow either seeds of sorrow or happiness, war or peace, turbulence or tranquility. Or as a much greater author than I once put it: “death and life are in the power of the tongue.”

What we say matters. What we write matters.

When someone sits down with your book in their hands, or pops open one of your blog posts to read with their iced coffee, in a way they are putting themselves into your hands. What are you going to give them? What are they going to walk away from your story with?

Are they going to walk away from it empty handed? Or are they going to walk away with something to think about? Something that impacted them - something that stirred their spirit?

Have you been on the internet lately? If so, you’ve probably noticed that there’s plenty of despair to go around. There’s plenty of chaos, and hate, and anger, and turbulence. There’s an abundance of darkness. But even greater in abundance is the light within you if you choose to let it shine out.

Let it shine out.

Let it shine through your eyes and your smile and your personality, yes - but also let it glimmer through those fingertips and onto those keys or into that pen. Let that light shine into every word, every sentence, every paragraph, every story. Let it shine in your writing.

Be the lighthouse on the cold and craggy isle, flickering vanilla beams into the billows of the storm. Stand strong and tall and firm and resolute. Stand and stand and stand and keep shining no matter how black the clouds become and regardless of how loud that empty old north wind blows. Because one day, just maybe, you will see the twinkle of lights on the horizon; little lost lights sailing towards shore.

Because they saw your light in the distance.

About the Book:

I’ve been running from my past for one hundred years. And I’m still just a teenager.

I was hand selected by my teacher, Sensei, to train in The Dimension - a secret place of refuge and training for the anomalies of past, present, and future earth. Here I would learn to connect to my ‘warrior within’ as Sensei calls it. Here I would learn to hold my breath for over an hour, channel energy orbs, commute between realms, and even shape-shift into an alternate form to match my own name: a hawk. But never did I guess that my training would include taking on a student of my own - a loose cannon of a college guy - with strange abilities of his own.

Try as I might to talk Sensei out of handing me this irritating task, my efforts prove fruitless. Late one evening, I invite Ion over to Sensei’s house in LA for a little chat; one that will turn his life upside-down. Shoving him into the broom closet turned portal, I drag Ion into the Dimension, opening his eyes to his true homeland: a realm of freaks and anomalies. His kin. As we train to become Protectors of future Earth, battling each other as well as our own demons, I begin to realize that there’s something more to Ion than I realized. For the first time in a hundred years, I begin to feel like I can believe in someone as much as Sensei believes in me.

But what I don’t realize is that there’s a darkness inside of Ion-- something he’s spent his life running from too. And beyond that, a looming threat hidden in plain sight - something that could destroy me, him, and the future of earth.
