3 Gifts Authors Offer Their Readers

Pin This!

Let’s face it: There isn’t a guaranteed and instant pay off for the writer who works hard at finishing his/her book. Especially when this book isn’t under contract.

Perhaps you’ve invested hours into growing in your craft and writing your book—only to receive harsh critiques. Maybe you’ve been tempted to give up on this dream altogether and find a more profitable way to spend your time.

The ugly truth is, you’re not guaranteed success in this industry. You’re not guaranteed that this book will become a best seller, receive a literary award, or obtain shining literary reviews. So is the little income you might receive from this book worth the blood, sweat, and tears you’re pouring into this project?

The Light of the World

Hope.

It’s the true message of the Christmas season. It’s the reason Christ came. God knew how we were in desperate need of a light to navigate us through the darkness of this world. He knew we needed salvation. We needed hope to save us from the sin of ourselves and the sin of this world.

So God sent us His one and only Son. Christ willingly entered the dirt of this world and wrapped Himself in flesh so we could have a reason to hope.

Now, when we walk through darkness, it no longer has power over us. When we find ourselves in sin, we can call upon our Redeemer. And when we trudge through suffering, Immanuel walks with us.

Darkness no longer has power because Christ's light shines brighter.

Is there still evil in this world? Will we still experience tribulation? Of course. But the light within us shines brighter than the darkness around us. We have a hope to hold onto that is an anchor through every storm in our lives (Heb. 6:19).

Not only that: we also know that this world is not our home. We're only traveling through. Some day, Jesus will return and bring us back with Him for eternity. Free of pain, suffering, sin, and sickness.

That’s why, no matter how much I suffer on this earth, no matter how gloomy the news may appear, I refuse to allow myself to slip into doom and despair. Because He who is in me is greater than He who is in the world (1 John 4:4).

It's why God sent His Son, isn't it? So we could walk through the night with this Light as our guide. Nothing can dim this.

Christmas truly is a celebration of not just Christ's birth, but our own rebirth in Him. Hope entered the world during Christmas.

Whatever you're walking through this season, I pray Christmas will be your reminder that this isn't the end of the story. The prophecy of a Messiah has been fulfilled, but the end of the story has yet to come to pass completely. Christ will come again to finish what He started. Death and sin and evil will be defeated once and for all.

Until then, let's draw to our knees and thank God for sending His Son. Not just to save the world, but to save you. And me. Because He loved each of us that much. He knew we would need an Immanuel -- Christ with us -- throughout every season of our lives. He knew we would need His Light as our guide, just like the Star of Bethlehem, which was used to help the wise men navigate the darkness on that very first Christmasnight.

As we sing Christmas carols this season, let's turn our eyes away from our current circumstances and fix them on our Saviour. Our light. Hope. Redeemer. Immanuel. Our rock.

Because He lives in us, light lives in us. Therefore, we will always have hope, despite the darkness that we may walk through on this earth. {Tweet this}

I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas! I'm taking a blogging break for the rest of December so I'll see you back here on Wednesday, January 4th. =)

The Never-Fading Light of Christmas

The Christmas tree in my house is now up, embellished in ornaments and twinkling with lights. "O Holy Night" plays on the Pandora station through my iPhone. Candles are lit, filling the house with the perfect holiday spice scent.

And yet, no amount of festivities, decorations, or Christmas treats can take away the tragedies that have occurred throughout the world lately.

As the Christmas season began to approach this year, I found myself wondering . . . How could I get into the "Christmas spirit" when others are still grieving over loved ones lost in the Paris tragedy? Why should I enjoy baking Christmas cookies when families are mourning over their lost mom, dad, brother, or sister?

This world is far from perfect. And as long as we are human--as long as we are living on this earth--we will be prone to the results of the fall.

Yet, none of this can take away the hope Christ came to bring: The hope of eternity. Promise of salvation. The gifts of peace, joy, and love. Victory over sin and death once and for all.

As Christians, we already have a sneak peak into the final chapter of this story. God wins! And you know what? There is no better time than Christmas than to celebrate this fact. Jesus came so that we would not be destroyed by sin and death. A beacon of light pierced through the darkness of this world when Mary gave birth to God's son.

This is why we celebrate Christmas. Not because we are turning our heads from the pain and suffering of this world.

But because we know that, ultimately, even the darkest of circumstances could never dim the light of Christ.

More Than a Christmas Carol

photo credit: moritzaust via photopin cc
Every Christmas and all throughout the world, people are acknowledging Christ. Christmas songs that proclaim Jesus’ birth are still played in shopping malls and sung on the lips of those who may not know Him. Jesus receives the kind of glory that He should in the month of December.

Of course, many of the carols we sing are simply traditions. They’re considered to be classics rather than hymnals that glorify our Savior. And unfortunately, even Christians—including myself—tend to forget the true meaning behind these songs that we habitually sing.

But they’re more than just songs to celebrate Christmas. The intention behind these songs was to remember our Savior’s birth.

Since it is easy for these carols to lose their meaning after hearing them dozens of times, I’ve decided to take one of my favorite ones and reflect on its lyrics, paraphrasing the truths behind each line.

Below are 5 takeaways from the song “O Holy Night”:

1)    Jesus is the light in our darkness.

“O holy night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of Our dear Saviour’s birth.”

All throughout the Bible, God uses analogies and symbolism to illustrate Biblical truths. I believe that the birth of Jesus is one of the most beautiful examples of this.

It is no coincidence that the wise men were led into the city of Bethlehem by a bright and shining star. Similarly, in the midst of the darkness of our life, God will be our light. He can guide us through this world and bring hope, guidance, and peace in each step.

2)   In the midst of despair, we have a reason to celebrate.

“A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn”

It’s a shame that the holidays can cause so much anxiety for us at times. It’s the exact opposite of how God wants us to respond to the birth of His son.

Jesus came to rescue us. He came to bring salvation for humanity, to offer hope in the midst of our weariness.

And this is the greatest gift of all. This is why we should be full of joy this season, celebrating our Savior’s birth.

3) In Christ, we are all created equal. In Christ, there is only love.

“Chains He shall break, for the slave is our brother.
And in His name, all oppression shall cease.”

The one who belongs to Christ should never have a reason to feel rejected. God’s law is love—it is not rules. Those who follow Him should never have a reason to feel condemned.

Christmas offers the perfect opportunity for Christians to spread this love by reaching out to the needy and to those who may feel unloved, just as Christ did. It is our job to become a representation of this love, to become a light in this dark world, and to share this freedom with others without judging or discriminating.

4) The first Christmas was a precious and sacred night, despite the circumstances.

Even though Jesus was born to a nobody in small-town Bethlehem—in a stable, nonetheless—this was a moment to be glorified.

“O hear the angle voices
O night divine!
O night when Christ was born
O night divine!
O night, O night divine!”

Jesus was worth the highest honor and royalty treatment, and yet God allowed Him to enter into this world as if he were an average human.

Maybe God wanted us to realize that what the world deemed as significant really wasn’t significant at all. Despite the fact that Jesus’ birth was not triumphant in the material sense, it was still sacred. The earthly circumstances could not have taken away the peace and joy that were experienced in the stable on that night.

And that alone should give us hope.

5) We get to praise His name forevermore.

“Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we
Let all within us praise His holy name
Christ is the Lord!
Their name forever praise we”

When we think of Jesus’ birth, we can experience the same joy that pierced through the darkness 2000 years ago, despite what our circumstances may look like. And from the joy in our hearts will rise a desire to glorify Christ’s name forever—from now and into eternity, from earth and into heaven.

As you sing the classic Christmas carols this season, I challenge you to look behind the words. Let’s receive the true Christmas spirit that God wanted us to have while we celebrate Christ’s birth, remembering that precious, holy night.

“Noel, Noel
O night, O night divine
Noel, Noel
O night, O night divine
Noel, Noel
O night, O holy night”

5 Intangible Christmas Gifts: The Real Reason for this Season

I’m sure you’ve heard it all before—“don’t forget the reason for this season.” And we try not to. But sometimes it’s just easy to get caught up in the holiday rush, to lose the true meaning of Christmas in the midst of a crowded mall or your child’s lengthy Christmas lists.

These things—going shopping for presents, attending Christmas parties, decorating your Christmas tree, etc.—are not a sin within themselves. We just have to keep in mind that these tangible objects are not the reason that we celebrate Christmas each year.

Mary, Did You Know?

Can you imagine what it would have been like to be Mary? To be told that you were chosen to bear God’s only Son?

It’s not like Mary knew it was coming. She was just an average girl leading an ordinary teenage life. No, she didn't attend a public high school every day. She didn't have a Facebook account—or even WiFi, for that matter. Now that’s hard to imagine!

However, I’m sure she had many of the same emotions that every teen experiences: Feelings of rejection, failure, depression, perhaps even loneliness. She could have even been struggling to find a purpose for her life.

I can imagine God watching her and thinking, “Mary, you have no idea. You can’t even comprehend all that I have in store for you.”

I wonder if—when God sees us crying out to Him—he thinks the same thing: “If only you knew what I have in store for you. If only you knew, then you would face every day with a smile rather than a frown.”

Give This Christmas Away {Unique Gift Idea + Giveaway!}

Every year, I try to do at least one thing to help brighten someone's Christmas. There are so many people out there who are suffering from lack of food, clothing, or shelter--and sometimes, I just get overwhelmed with the amount of people in need.

However, God doesn't call us to meet the need of every person out there. He only calls us to help as much as we can with the resources we have.

This Christmas, if you are also looking for a way to give, you now have the perfect opportunity. Because not only do you have the chance to help provide therapy equipment and toys for a special needs toddler--but by doing so, you can buy a unique, personalized Christmas gift for whoever you wish.

The name of the little girl you can help is Aubrey, and she is my very sweet 1-year-old cousin.

Aubrey at 4 months old
Aubrey was born August 29, 2012 with an undiagnosed neuromuscular disorder. After being born prematurely, she had to stay in the NICU for 4 months before being released. The doctors were unsure if she would be strong enough to sustain life.

Aubrey with her big sister at 4 days old
Because Aubrey has such a difficult time breathing, she has to be on ventilator support 24/7. Her muscles are unable to work like other kids, which makes it difficult to for her to make any kind of movement, or even to communicate.

Click here for the full story on Aubrey's journey
(make sure your volume is turned up).

Since Aubrey is now 1-year-old and is getting older and smarter, her needs are becoming much greater.

Because of that, a Senior Executive Director for Thirty-One Gifts has opened an online shop to raise money for Aubrey this Christmas.

Starting today through December 6th, all proceeds purchased from this Thirty-One catalog (containing purses, totes, wallets, stationary,  bags, etc.) will go towards the Shop for Aubrey Fund. This fund will help purchase an iPad arm (for special needs), as well as an indoor adaptive/therapeutic swing for Aubrey.

Again, this is a perfect opportunity to not only buy a personalized gift for a loved one, but to also give to a very precious special needs toddler.

Aubrey at 1 year, with her big sisters
Everyone who purchases an item from the Thirty-One catalog will receive 10 extra entries in a giveaway for a free signed copy of PURPLE MOON, as well as a PURPLE MOON coffee mug! (Be sure to enter the giveaway at the end of this post.)

Click here to begin shopping. Once you order, make sure you see the words "Order Submitted" at the top of the page to confirm that it went through.

Aubrey is seriously the most precious little 1-year-old. She is just like any other toddler her age in the way that she loves attention, affection, and "playing" with her therapy toys. You can tell this by the way the corners of her mouth lifts when she's happy, or the way her eyes start tearing when she's sad.

Aubrey's muscles may be weak, but her heart and mind are very strong. She would be absolutely thrilled to receive new toys this Christmas, and new therapy equipment to strengthen her muscles.

If you are purchasing from the catalog, be sure to RSVP on the Facebook page by clicking here.

If you are unable to purchase from the catalog, you can still enter the giveaway below (US only):

Gift Ideas for Teens & Tweens: Clean Music & Books

Inexpensive Christmas gifts for teens and tweens are not always easy to find. And if you haven't realized it yet, teens can be pretty picky about what they are interested in.

However, every teen loves good entertainment. So why not create a gift basket with a selection of clean entertainment that your teen will love?

New, Clean Reads for Teens & Tweens

Purple Moon
Ages: 12 - 25+
Genre: YA contemporary
Selena's life isn't turning out to be the fairy tale she imagined as a kid.

That hope seemed to vanish long ago when her dad kicked her and her mom out of the house. This summer might finally hold the chance of a new beginning for Selena ... but having to live with her snobby cousin in Lake Lure, NC while waiting for her mom to get out of rehab wasn't how Selena was planning on spending her summer. She soon begins to wonder why she committed to give up her "bad habits" for this.

Things don't seem too bad, though. Especially when Selena gains the attention of the cute neighbor next door. But when her best friend back home in Brooklyn desperately needs her, a secret that's been hidden from Selena for years is revealed, and when she becomes a target for one of her cousin's nasty pranks, she finds herself having to face the scars from her past and the memories that come along with them. Will she follow her mom's example in running away, or trust that God still has a fairy tale life written just for her?

(For holiday specials & giveaways for this book, be sure to see the end of this post.)

The Revised Life of Ellie Sweet
Ages: 12 - 17+
Genre: YA contemporary

Ellie Sweet is a lot of things—good girl, novelist, silent adorer of the new boy at school, Palmer. But when “outcast” gets added to the list, she decides it’s time to take reality into her own hands … and tweak it as needed.

In the pages of her book, she’s Lady Gabrielle, favorite of the medieval Italian court. Her once-friends are reduced to catty ladies-in-waiting, and the too-charming Palmer—who in real life never spares her a second word—gets to be nothing more than a rake wracked by unrequited love for her. She even has a perfect real-life villain in the brooding Chase, who hails from the wrong side of town.

But just when she’s getting along great in her fictional world, the real one throws her a few curves. With Chase pursuing her, Palmer wanting to date her—but in secret—and the details of her manuscript going public, Ellie suddenly receives more attention than she ever really wanted. And when her former-friends discover what she’s been writing, they’re determined to teach Ellie a lesson about the severe consequences of using her pen as her sword.

Dead Man's Hand

Ages: 9 - 15
Genre: YA supernatural mystery
It's All Just a Show...Right? Just Hollywood theatrics? "This is an authentic old west ghost town, son. Around these parts the dead don't stay dead."

Nick Caden's vacation at Deadwood Canyon Ghost Town takes a deadly turn toward trouble when the fourteen-year-old finds himself trapped in a livery stable with the infamous outlaw Jesse James. The shooter whirls, aims and... vanishes. Great theatrics, Nick thinks, except now he's alone in the hayloft with the bullet-riddled body of Billy the Kid. And by the time the sheriff arrives, the body disappears.

Soon Nick is caught in a deadly chase---from an abandoned gold mine, through forbidden buffalo hunting grounds, and across Rattlesnake Gulch. Around every turn he finds another suspect. Will Nick solve the murder? Will his parents have him committed? Or will the town's infatuation with Hollywood theatrics conceal the real truth about souls, spirits and the destiny that awaits those who die.
