Ask a YA Author: Send in Your Questions on Writing, Publishing, etc.!

The other day I received a sweet email from a someone who had recently read Purple Moon and had a list of questions for me to answer on writing. Rather than answering all of them, I have decided to give you the chance to not only hear my responses, but to send in your questions as well.

So between now and Thursday (7/24), feel free to send me as many questions you may have on Purple Moon, writing, publishing, blogging, etc. and I will post my responses in a Q&A video on Friday. =) You can send them in the comments below, by email, or as a Tweet with the hashtag #askaYAauthor. Don't limit yourself to the questions you may have. Be creative! If there are too many for me to answer in one video, I will record another Q&A eventually. So feel free to send in as many as you'd like.

{Also, don't forget to participate in last week's giveaway! Click here for your chance to win a signed copy of Purple Moon, Choose Now by Nicole Quigley, and Firsts in Fiction by Aaron Gansky.}

  1. Wow, thanks! Hmmmm.....
How do you make yourself sit down to write daily (or however often you write)? It's riduculously hard sometimes to not be distracted by a billion things we have to do or find more interesting.
    Thanks for doing this!

  2. That's kool! Here are mine:

-What is your daily writing goal?
-Do you typically rewrite your first draft over and over and over again, or are you usually satisfied with writing one draft and revising that one?
-What methods do you usually use in developing your characters? (For example, character journals, interviewing characters, etc.)

That's it for now--I'll probably come up with some others later :-)

  3. What is one of your favorite YA authors and books? What is one of the hardest things about being published? What is your favorite thing about being published? Least favorite thing? What is one of your favorite ways of promotion? Thanks for answering the questions! :)

  4. Thanks so much! Here are the questions that just popped into my head. However, like Rcubed, I may come up with more later.

~Are you a pantser or a planner, and if you are a planner, how do you outline your novels?
~What is your writing process like?
~Do you write you stories as fast as possible, or do you take a slower approach?
~Did you publish any short stories or articles before you published Purple Moon?
~If a teen writer gets an agent, but would like to pursue another career full time and writing only part time, would that be okay with the agent?

    Thanks for reading!

  5. Do you know of any publishing companies that are willing to consider publishing fiction by teens (as long as it's well-written, of course :)) without the author having to pay for it?

  6. This is so cool! Thanks so much! :D

This is kinda similar to Rcubed's question, but what's your revising process like? If you have multiple drafts, do you have a certain thing you focus on revising in each one (character, plot, pacing, etc)?

That's the only one I can think of right now, but I might post more later. :)

  8. Do you keep writing goals? Or do you just move on and know you're making progress?
What social medias seem to promote your book the most?

Thanks for this!! It's so cool!! =D I forgot one of my questions, as soon as I remember I'll ask ;)

  9. I'm back with another question! :)

What are some of your tips on choosing a project/determining if an idea is big enough and would make a good novel?

  10. Thank you so much for giving your time to do this! I really appreciate it.

    1. What things do you do to find out more about your characters? (charts, interviews, journal, etc.)
    2. Do you draw like Selena does?
    3. Have written any stories other like Purple Moon?
    4. How do you choose the names for your characters?
    5. Do you base any of your characters on real people?

I might think of some more later. Thanks again!

  11. Thanks so much for helping all of us aspiring authors out by answering some of our questions!

-How did you pick your agent?
-Do you have a new book in the works?
-Did you attend any writing conferences before getting published?

    Thanks again!

  12. Oh, this is cool. :) Thanks for taking the time to do this! I have just a few questions.

    1) How exactly do you go about revising a novel?
    2) How do you decide if a character needs to be cut or combined with another character?
    3) How does the publishing process work?

  13. I have a few more questions:
Have you ever written anything out of the contemporary genre?
Who is your favorite character in Purple Moon? Do you relate to any of the characters?
What are some of the differences of the first draft of Purple Moon and the final copy? Did you find it hard changing things?

    Thank you!
    In Christ,
    Sarah

  14. I'm back with a few more questions.
~How did you find your voice as a writer?
~How much does platform matter in being published as a teen?
~If someone blogs with a pen name and uses his/her blog as a platform, would that person also need to publish his/her book under the same name?
