Monday's Minute Challenge: Writing Prompt Contest for Teens & Up

A quick writing challenge (and contest) to help get your creative juices flowing for the new week.

  1. The entry must be between 150 - 300 words. Otherwise, your entry will not be accepted. (In order to see how many words your entry is, write it in Microsoft Word, or you can copy and paste it here.)
  2. The deadline for the contest will be the following Friday.
  3. You do not have to be a teen to enter the contest.
  4. The same person cannot win first place two weeks in a row. (Some exceptions may apply.)
  5. If there is at least 5 entries, the panel of judges will select a 2nd and 1st place. If there is at least 10 entries, the judges will select a 3rd, 2nd, and 1st place. However, if there is under 5 entries, the panel of judges will only select one winner.
  6. If there are at least 10 entries, there will be a few Honorable Recognitions, which are the next highest winners. They will receive a badge, as well as 3 points.
  7. The winners will receive a badge for their blog, as well as extra points (see the point system below).
  8. The winner will be chosen based on the judges's preferences, as well as the following questions: Does this entry capture my attention immediately? Does it make me want to continue reading? Is the writing clear? They will also take into consideration the writer's voice and style--not necessarily technical issues, such as grammar, punctuation, etc.
  9. If you have entered at least 3 contests and have yet to place, send me an email and I will be happy to give you a critique of your last entry, which will include tips and suggestions.
  10. This is only for fun and to stretch your writing muscles--not necessarily to be taken too seriously. =)

Thanks so much to everyone who voted! It helped the judge panel tremendously.

(Keep in mind that the judges are not aware of which entry belongs to which participant until after the judging is complete.)

The entries that the judges thought was the most intriguing (based on rule #4) is ...

Third place winner:

An empty boat.
An empty heart.
Can I ever find them?
I stepped carefully, staring at the boat just to my right. Was this the boat my parents had taken so long ago? When they entered this forest never to return? What terrible thing could make people vanish, leaving no trace of the King and Queen of Aridna and thousands of others? Questions raced though my mind, a kilometer a second, but the quiet serene forest whispered.
"Nothing to fear. Nothing to fear. Take in the beauty. Nothing to fear."
"Help!" A panicked scream rang though the quietness, making the forest atmosphere seem cold and foreboding. I ran through the forest, not stopping to make sure I moved noiselessly. No one was in sight. I searched the ground frantically, looking for any signs that might give me a clue, but the forest whispered it had all been a dream.
“Nothing to fear. Nothing to fear. Take in the beauty. Nothing to fear.”
A hand reached for me, grabbing my arms, roughly pinning me down. I screamed, but a man came into view his rugged face all too familiar.
So this is what happened to everyone in the forest.
He drew a knife, holding it to my back, I staggered forwards as the other man pushed me.
“Tell me where the kingdom's stores are, Princess.”
I stared up at him defiantly, refusing to back down.
“You've taken my parents, you've ravaged the kingdom. What more can you take that I care about?”
“Maybe your parents aren't dead.” he said, and I started.
“Maybe they're right over there,” my eyes followed his pointing finger.

Congratulations, Kaira! Click here for your badge. =)

Second place winner:
Rachel glided easily through the forest, never pausing for a rest, even though the river was a good deal away from the village. Once the river was in view, she ran ecstatically to it. Rachel stopped herself a second too late, and fell into the raging water below. A few seconds later, a sopping wet head popped out of rushing river. With a mischievous grin plastered on her face, she swam over to the side of the river and climbed onto one of the many rocks. Laughing blissfully, Rachel let herself fall back into the river. She swam around for a few minutes, just enjoying life and being happy that she was finally away from Saturday cleaning. Whew! What a relief! Rachel thought slipping easily through the water. “Well, I guess I need find the bucket to get the water for mother.” Rachel grumbled leaving to look for the bucket and figure out a good excuse because she’d used the same one for four months. Rachel strolled along the river, when she noticed an unusual boat tied up along the rocky shore. Normally, she wouldn’t have noticed something like that, but today was no ordinary day for Rachel. She tried just looking for the bucket, but her curiosity got the best of her. She went to the boat. As soon as she got a good look at the boat, something hit her in the back of her head and she remembered no more.
Congratulations, Anna! Click here for your badge. =)

First place winner:

I don't care for memories, but two things are etched permanently into the corner of my mind; and they both involve the eyes of the girl who stole something from me that I didn't even know was there.
The first is the way her dark eyes looked fearlessly into mine the day she trusted me with her life. The second is this, this very moment, as those same eyes look at me with a horror I've only seen once before, as if she doesn't know me any longer.
The span of three feet between us feels like an utter impasse. All I want is to step over, grab her tight, and take her away from the pain written in those eyes. But to do that, I'd have to take her away from me.
So I stay where I am.
"Bird-" It's her pet name, the one I gave her. It was stupid until I realized it always made her smile. But now she recoils as if I'd hit her.
"Don't- call me- that..." she turns her head away from me.
"Kristen." I say her name, begging her. I'd get down on my knees if I thought it would do any good, if it would make her forget everything I'd just told her. "I know it's wrong, it's horrible, but I'm sorry." She of all people should know how hard those two words are for me to say. "Please, can't we-"
"We?" The sheer pain in her voice cuts me off. Her hands are white as she clenches them together. "We, Josh?" She raises her head, her eyes tearful and wounded, as if she's ripping out her own heart as she speaks. "We will never be the same again."
Congratulations, S. Brightly! Click here for your badge. =)

    6. Thanks so much for the comments, everyone! The short story/excerpt is part of the fantasy story I'm writing right now. I sure hope I don't lose interest in the story before I can finish it because it happens all the time to me. Currently, I really love it, although it's going to take a lot of hard work.

  2. I'm doing the picture prompt.

Cara stood a few yards behind her little girl, who was sitting on her knees at the edge of the cliff, looking out to the sea. Cara turned to her brother beside her, “I don’t think this is healthy.”
Calvin pursed his lips. “I don’t see what we can do, short of telling her that he’s dead.”
Cara’s arms went from being crossed to down at her sides in an instant. “I will not lie!”
Calvin threw up his hands. “He might as well be!” He yelled. At Cara’s sharp look he lowered his voice to a stage-whisper. “He isn’t coming back. She can’t waste away her life watching for his boat to come sailing in!”
Cara bit her lip. “She’s not wasting away her life. It has only been three weeks.”
“Four,” came the small voice from in front of them. Cara’s daughter, Maya, turned to face them. “Four weeks, three days and 17 hours.”
Calvin looked at Cara, raising his brow.
“I don’t remember the exact minute he left, so I can’t count those,” the nine-year-old explained.
“Maya, aren’t you ready to go back home?” Cara prompted. “I’m sure Riley has missed you. You could have a tea party outside! It’s nice enough today.”
“No thank you, momma.” With that, Maya turned back around and resumed her post. She was the most vigilant watchman there ever was.

  3. I had never been more tempted to lie in my entire life. But then again, I'd done nothing but lie this whole trip. He needed to know.
"Wade?" tears fill my eyes as I sit next to him.
"Allie? Is something wrong?" he asks, concerned.
"My name isn't really Allie Smeth," Wade looks startled as I speak.
    "I am Aloisa. Princess Aloisa."
"Aloisa! Daughter of the former king and queen?"
    I nod.
"So, what are you going to do?"
"Win back the kingdom, and..." I smile, "And get revenge on the people who killed my brother and mother."
"Your brother's name was Adrien?" He looks as if I'd punched him.
    "Yes."
It isn't easy to tell anyone my real identity. I'm used to brooding on it, never telling anyone for fear of being caught.

"Allie, I can't let you do this." his expression shows desperation. Why would this matter so much to him? I'd hoped for his support and help.
"Do what, and how will you stop me!" my fingers play with the hilt of my sword.
"My father, killed the Prince. Your brother."
I stare at him and am barely aware of drawing my sword.
    "Allie!" he pleads.
My heart feels empty, but my care for this shepherd boy can't get in the way of revenge.

    2. This prompt is based on a story I'm writing.

There was a war and the castle was besieged. Aloisa barely escaped but her family died.

His father was one of the fighters of the opposing side, and would have fought partly because he was required to and partly because he would have been able to support his family doing it; however his father does really regret it.

  5. Hello everyone! I'm Kendra! I'm using both passage using these items: hammer, flip flops, and treasure chest and passage using this piece of dialogue: I had never been more tempted to lie in my entire life

The police man who'd always been my friend stood in front of me, clearly not wanting to bring the subject up,
    "Sit down, Arianna."
I sat down, gripping the table between us hard.
"Did you steal from the chest?"
    I fidgeted, "No."
"Then why were you in the cellar?"
I had never been more tempted to lie in my entire life. Here I was, being tried for a crime I didn't commit. At least, I like to tell myself I didn't commit it, but I had tried to. Swallowing, and still not knowing what I would say, "Yes!" I blurted.
He looked confused, "Yes what?" there was a tone of skepticism in his voice.
"I tried to get the treasure chest, I couldn't open it, even with a hammer." I hung my head.
"At least you were honest," he looked at me, "Thankfully, there wasn't much in the chest."
I looked up, shocked, "There wasn't? I heard there was gold, silver and gems. One of the biggest clearest rubies..." I broke off, looking at him confused.
He sighed, "I started that rumor."
    "Why?"
"We needed to track down that thief, he's been stealing from our town for years. I knew he'd want to steal from the treasure chest so we set it up, the guard 'fell asleep' on duty and then the two of you were caught red handed."
"What was in the chest?" I inquired.
He laughed, "A pair of flip-flops."

    1. Lol, that would be awkward to get caught trying to steal what you thought were numerous "riches" but was really just a pair of flip-flops. :)

  8. Hi, I'm using the picture prompt. Hope you enjoy!

Nicole stared out over the ocean before her, wishing Avery’s boat was there. Climbing trees and swimming wasn’t as much fun as it was when she was here. Suddenly a black speck appeared in the distance. Nicole jumped and started waving her arms about so that Avery might see her if she was on the deck. Wow, thought Nicole as the ship got closer. Since when did they invent ships that don’t need drivers? I don’t see a single human being up there. Nicole was trying to decide whether she should tell her mother that the boat was moving by itself and no one was on it or if she should wait for Avery’s arrival. She finally decided that she should run home and tell her mother about the boat when some men jumped out of the boat. "Now I’ve got three choices to do. Go home, wait for the boats arrival, or go see if those men know how to swim.” Nicole groaned, looking this way and that trying to determine what to do. She was so busy trying to make up her mind that she didn’t notice that the men were sneaking up behind her, silently pulling out small knifes. By the time Nicole had finally made up her mind, they were only a couple yards behind her. “I hope that nothing else happens, otherwise I’ll never get anything done today.” said Nicole, hoping that nothing else would go wrong. Then she realized that the boat was heading towards the dangerous rocks over on the other side of the island. She was about to run for help when she felt cold metal against her neck. “Now don’t make a move, maybe we won’t kill you like your friend,” hissed a voice that Nicole knew too well.

  11. I'm doing the dialogue prompt.

I had never been more tempted to lie my entire life. Of course, most of the other times, I gave into the temptation. This time was different. Not only was I staring down the barrel of a gun, but this time, I actually didn’t lie. Sure, lying probably would have spared me, easy as that. But I couldn’t.
This time, I had a weakness, one that made me willing to give my life for another person. Love. It’s a word that made me want to hurl into the bushes, but at the same time almost made me want to smile despite the life-or-death situation.
Josh’s eyes burned holes into my head. I could imagine their soft brown igniting as they stared at me. I didn’t expect him to jump in to save me, or even to try. I’d basically given him away to the soldiers just to save myself. Now was my time to right my wrong.
The soldier jerked his gun closer to my face. “Tell me. Now.”
“I took Josh as a hostage. I forced him to lead me to your base. Go ahead.” I closed my eyes in anticipation of the crack of the gun.
It came. The crack echoed in my ears, but the bullet never pierced my skin. I opened my eyes a couple seconds later to see Josh sprawled across the ground in front of me, blood spilling from a wound in his chest that was meant for me. His brown eyes met mine, and he mouthed one word: “Okay.” That word alone told me everything I needed to know.

  14. Loving everyone's entries so far :) I used the picture prompt, and mine is under 200 words.

    I left.
    I’m done.
    I’m free.

I ran for miles. I ran without stopping even though my lungs burned something fierce and my shaky legs threatened to give out at any moment. I ran until I reached the edge of the cliff, and I collapsed gracelessly onto my knees as I greedily sucked in gasps full of the salty air.

    No more shackles.
    No more Godless, sleazy men.
    No more torment.

I allow the relief to wash over me and the anxiety to dissolve as I look out over the clear blue waters and rolling waves. I’m finally safe. They can’t hurt me anymore. After countless months of being trapped in the dark, damp cell, after being stripped of every ounce of my dignity, and after being forced to endure the endless torture of my captor and his companions, I’m finally free, and I'm never looking back.

    I fought.
    I’m alive.
    I’m safe.

As the sea breeze dances through my unkempt hair, I allow myself to smile for the first time in months. I can finally breathe.

  15. I used the hammer, treasure chest, and flip-flops prompt. My entry is 299 words. :)

The night breeze played with my tangled hair and the moon shone as a golden globe above me. Crickets all around chirped their midnight song in tune with the frogs croaking on the banks of the lake at my side. I tip-toed softly through the sticky mud and looked again at the 'map' I held in my hands. It looked more like a couple of scribbles on a napkin to me. True, one could see the rough outlines of hills and the crude representation of the lake but that didn't make it any easier to read. My kooky friend who had made this for me had even place a drawing of a treasure chest where I was supposed to dig for this thing.

What was I looking for? Even I wasn't exactly sure but Alex had promised something amazing. I take another step but the ground slips from beneath my feet and comes up to kiss my face. I must have been crazy to wear flip-flops in this muck. I pull myself up off the ground; now thoroughly soaked through and shivering. In the distance I see the silhouette of the pine tree marked on my makeshift map. I rush over to it. Carefully I counted out the steps from the tree heading East. Sixteen, seventeen, eighteen until I reach twenty. I start shoveling all the while my heart dances a jig in my chest. Finally, I hit something. It is a small box with a cheap lock on it. Now I'm glad I brought my hammer after all. I hit the lock with as much force as I can muster until it breaks off. Slowly, I flip back the lid like they always do in the movies.

I let out a scream. I should have expected as much!

  19. I'm using the picture prompt. (I think almost everyone chose that this week!) 196 words total, give or take a few. :)

She knelt alone on the damp sand-cliff, facing the rising of the sun. The wind blew warmly against her skin as she watched the beating of the waves against the shoreline, beating like the brokenness of her heart. It was amazing, this heart of hers; even when the bloody bruises of all her yesterdays mangled it beyond recognition, the weight of wounds crushing it down, it would not give up, but continued to beat steadily.

It was a miracle all of its own. Every minute, every second, of every day, she lived her own little miracle. Simply by the very act of breathing.

She clasped her hands over her heart as her eyes took in the beauty of the waters. She'd lived through more pain than she had ever thought possible, but she would not let it define her. It could not own her. Not anymore.

She murmured the words into the salty breeze. "By His wounds I am healed, by His grace I am redeemed. The old has gone, the new has come." She whispered it in defiance of all that sought to keep her bound in darkness.

"I am the one Jesus loves."

  21. Last one:

    Beeep. Beeep. Beeeeeeeep.

The monitors connected to the female body of Specimen 301-19 started to notice the changes taking place. This teenager was awake just as she was alive- sitting up in her bed and after taking in a good look of the area.

Decoding the message signals and even viewing various camera’s on her screen in the control room, Dr. Sarah Shippen was hesitant to believe what each machine confirmed. But she had prepared for this, so even as her heart would later cry “I had never been more tempted to lie in my entire life” she had no difficulties in doing so. It was for the best, no matter the consequences.

Dr. Shippen kept her eyes on the girl as she pulled out her radio, saying with an even tone “Base this is Control. One of the specimens has survived the journey to Earth. How would you like me to perform termination?”
